Waiving GRE and TOEFL scores!!!

Posted by saintdeb on December 31, 2007

I was going through a site yesterday which alleges to be the best resource available for students going for their higher education in States. To be honest, I was flabbergasted to even see such a post there. The fact that some universities do waive off the GRE and TOEFL score requirements is great on the face of it! But I am unable to understand as to why this should be such a big issue! The simple fact that almost all courses in States require these standardized scores makes it important for every aspiring candidate to put in the best possible effort and in parallel get good percentiles! More importantly, simple logic says that there must be some really good reasoning’s for the waiving of these scores in some programs as allegedly cited by the website! I am certain that all these programs definitely require candidates of high calibre and skills. How then can the score matter!? Isn’t it logical that a good candidate be selected irrespective of some skewed and questionable results! To be honest, most of the good universities in the states no longer require high scores. Stanford deciding to doll out an admit to a guy with 1340 this year, is a testimony of the trend which we must acknowledge and accordingly adjust to!

I have come to believe that there is some kind of enterprise growing out of this entire US craze here in India (maybe it has already set in and I am just a bit late to realize the same)! Anyhow, what’s sad is that this enterprise is coming up with the sole objective of profit and commercialization at its core! I sincerely feel that applicants should think ten times before committing themselves to any of the myriad of consultants or as I more often like to call them, leeches, available out there! Also be vary and judiciously decide what information is correct and what is misleading using your own fine judgement. Any doubts should make you research on your own through the Internet and get to your own conclusions which you can safely rely on!!!

I was forced to write this article after seeing the plight of my dear friend who decided on using a consultant (I would refrain from naming the same) and finally had to do everything on his own!!!!

Note: The views presented here are my own! Please understand that it is up-to your discretion to accept them on the face of it or find out for yourselves as to what the reality is!!!! I would also like to point out here that its not that all consultants are bad or that all websites out there are misleading! Again use your own head and have faith in your own selves! refer DISCLAIMER
