Graduate Studies!!

A new life beckons me! Exciting times lay ahead! Hopefully putting it all down here would help me and the entire “fraternity” to get through the highs and lows of Grad life!

First up, I must thank you for spending your valuable time reading my posts! I am a “not so intelligent aka Kam Akal” – as many of my friends would agree – chemical engineer planning for graduate studies starting in the fall season of 2008. I have always felt a strong craving for doing something meaningful, something unique! Through this blog, I hope to get a new meaning in life! I hope to spread knowledge and in the bargain, gain some self satisfaction and semblance of contentment!

Now a few words describing my journey till date! I am a simple guy (atleast I like to think that way). I did my 4 years of engineering without much trouble and took up a job (3 job changes actually) which was pretty rewarding and enriching experience. I have always felt a strange penchant for core engineering disciplines (I am what some may call, the Machine Guy – rather the Process Guy ;-) ). I have decided on a PhD as I really like fundamental research. At this point I must clarify that my liking for research is not due to some path breaking research which I did (I haven’t), rather it is a culmination of many factors in my life which all point to that one direction.

I know grad studies is filled with highs and lows (the rainbow of feelings which one comes face to face with is mind boggling, to say the least)! Last 5 months have showed me that much and a glimpse has been more than enough. It is my inquisitive nature that drives me towards research. The same led me to try and understand the nuances of grad studies in the first place (this blog is a manifestation of the same :-) ). I have always felt that my experiences are probably in line with many others and thus hope that this blog is able to get all of us (like-minded) together! I sincerely hope that this blog becomes a place for fun….a place where all prospective and current graduate students can come together and share their views and in the bargain, get some useful information as well!

My ultimate dream is to create a graduate fraternity that is unique. One that transcends the boundaries of not just cultures but also specializations! One that has people from all facets of academia as well as industry; from business as well as free-lancers, who can help create an environment of healthy discussion, debate and resource sharing which would ultimately help the future generations! (It’s a difficult dream to realize but I hope we all do for our own benefit)!

Please understand that to this end, I place upon you some faith and ask for your co-operation! I have created communities in “ORKUT” and “FACEBOOK”, two popular social networking sites, to get all like minded individuals together. I ask everyone interested to join the groups and make them meaningful! Also I hope that someday, fraternity members would start linking different sites and blogs that would together spearhead our common cause! To this end, I would encourage all like minded individuals to contact me, either through the comments section or by mailing me at this id.

WHY MONEY? WHY ADS!?

As an individual, I believe in free flow of information and sharing of knowledge. To that end, internet today provides a very valuable tool. At the same time, I feel that there is a necessity of professionalism and certain “code of conduct” on part of individuals out there who profess to be spreading information/knowledge. I simply hate it when I see people writing about some product in a way so as to endorse it and I see an ad of the same product on the site/blog. After all, I am reading something hoping to get the true picture which is hopefully an outcome of the author’s personal experiences. How can I believe in somebody who endorses something for materialistic gain and then hopes that I would go by his word? In fact, such an act is tantamount to saying that the reader is a dim-witted being, which I surely don’t appreciate. My solemn hope is that I remain free from such moralistic sabotage and stay focused on my goals to give my readers the true picture!

COMPATIBILITY ISSUES

I have tested this blog with Windows Internet Explorer, Firefox and Mozilla. There are a few issues with Firefox and Mozilla which make the browsing experience a little sour. I am not too sure about the compatibility and any issues with other browsers like Opera and Safari and would like your feedback. At present, I recommend WINDOWS INTERNET EXPLORER 7 (VISTA / XP-sp2 / XP x64 editions) for the best browsing experience. However, for the security conscious, I recommend Firefox. (I use FIREFOX)

download Windows Internet Explorer 7 download Firefox 2.0 web browser

Some of the downloads use rar archive and can be opened easily using WINRAR. Download it if needed……..

WINRAR DOWNLOAD PAGE

Please understand that this web page is not optimized for speed loading. The total HTML request comes to around 270KB for the blog link. It may take approximately half a minute to load through a 56K modem. Though a 512K line would take around 5-10 seconds. I hope my readers are not troubled with the loading time issue. Thanks for your support! If it does create too much of a problem, inform me and I would try to reduce the loading time to the best of my ability.
